I put my Christmas decorations up this year it always gets me thinking about past Christmases. One of my favorite memories was actually kind of bittersweet but still a lovely memory.
The Christmas after my mother had died, my dad was bound and determined we would have a good holiday. He just didn’t realize he would have any helpers.
I was trying to get my youngest brother to go to bed. I had plans to spend Christmas Eve at my best friends house. Her mother invited me. Of course he didn’t want to go to sleep. Suddenly there was a knock on the door. One of my brothers answered and suddenly I hear “Ho, Ho, Ho Merry Christmas!”
The house we lived in had a long hall way and my brother ran down it, stopping short of the door, wide-eyed and almost speechless. He whispered “Santa”.
Under the costume and beard, I could see a friend of my older brother. He had dressed as Santa and was traveling the neighborhood visiting all his friends who had siblings under the age of 10. He was a hit.
After whispering with Santa, my brother gave me no problem going to bed and I was off to my own Christmas Eve Celebrations.
Every year I remember this. My brothers are now old enough to have children of their own. Some of them even have grandchildren. We have many Christmas memories to share but this is one of my favorites.
